Best chicken fried steak in state right here in Corpus Christi
Nolan's Original Poorboys serves one of the best chicken fried steaks in the state says The San Antonio Express-News and mySA.com. Nolan's was named one of the Top 10 Chicken Fried Steaks in the Lone Star State earlier this month.
"We bread it per order," says co-owner Nolan Culp Jr., when asked what sets his CFS apart from the rest. "Most restaurants pre-bread."
Nolan's is a family owned operation with two locations. Nolan Culp Sr. and son Kevin run the Nolan's Original Poorboys at 2330 Airline in Corpus Christi. Nolan Jr. handles the restaurant at 14101 Northwest Blvd. in Calallen.
"We've got the same great steak at both places," Nolan Jr. says. "We've been in business for 50 years and we've been making the same chicken fried steak for 50 years. People love it."
The breading and gravy are made from scratch. The tenderized steak is first dipped into seasoned flour and then into milk before it hits the fryer. The result is a crispy brown, tender steak topped with gravy and served with homemade mashed potatoes and green beens simmered in onion and bacon. Warm, home-made bread topped with sesame seeds rounds out the home cooked goodness.
Started by his grandfather and father five decades ago, Nolan's Poorboys also serves steaks, seafood and, of course, poorboy sandwiches. Their fried shrimp is also a popular item that often sells out, says Nolan Jr. Their Philly cheese steak is another favorite, but the chicken fried steak has hit the big time, with its picture appearing in best-of lists around the state.
"In other parts of the country you have fried chicken," he says. "In Texas, we have chicken fried steak. It's a wholesome food, tenderized and breaded. It's good."
