Gov. Greg Abbott was the guest speaker at the ribbon cutting of the new Steel Dynamics plant in Sinton on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The flat-roll steel mill has the potential to bring additional industry to its 2,500-acre plot.

Boosted by a Texas Enterprise Fund grant of $5.9 million, the plant will create nearly 600 jobs and generate more than $1.9 billion in capital investment.

"Texas remains a shining example of business excellence in the United States thanks to companies like Steel Dynamics who are moving here in droves to grow, flourish, and contribute to our booming economy," Abbott said. "I am proud to welcome Steel Dynamics to the great state of Texas and look forward to working together as we ensure a brighter, more prosperous future for Sinton and the entire Lone Star State."

Steel Dynamics is close to customers in three major regions, providing a ready supply of raw materials via the Corpus Christi port.

The Corpus Christi City Council also has shown support of the project with recent approval to spend over $850,000 to fund off-site stormwater improvements for a nearby Annaville residential development.

Funded by bonds from 2012, 2016, and 2018, the move is part of an economic development initiative to incentivize residential home development in areas near the plant.

Steel Dynamics chose Sinton for its facility site in July 2019.

The steel plant has been in the works for the past several years, and three years ago, San Patricio County approved tax incentives for it. Included in the proposal was a three-year tax abatement with required benchmarks for it to receive the benefits.

Included in the abatements is the creation of at least 500 full-time positions with health benefits and training. At least 150 of the personnel would have to be residents of San Patricio or bordering counties, including Nueces County.

Abbott also presented Steel Dynamics with a Texas flag and a proclamation to officially welcome the company to the Lone Star State.
