To hire local is to hire smart, which is the name of a new initiative by ExxonMobil as it prepares to build and hire for the world’s largest steam cracker plant. Gulf Coast Growth Ventures created the Hire Smart-Hire Local program to help train and hire local residents for construction jobs, permanent jobs and job training.

"The GCGV Project will bring thousands of jobs to the area, and we are committed to filling as many of those jobs as we can with local residents," said John Mabry, operations manager for the GCGV Project, in a news statement. "These jobs will often require specialized training and skills, and that's where this new initiative comes in. Hire Smart-Hire Local focuses on connecting local residents with opportunities to work with the project, from construction to operations."

Thousands of jobs could be created by the project, many of them highly skilled ones with competitive wages and benefits. At peak, 6,000 construction workers will be needed on the site.
