Gator’s Closed to Make Way for Rooms to Go in Corpus Christi
Gator’s Sports Bar closed for business — at least for now — with a final concert and Super Bowl party February 2. Demolition of Gator’s and four other buildings at 4610 South Padre Island Drive at Everhart Road will begin this month or next to make way for a new Rooms to Go furniture store.
Currently located at 3901 South Padre Island Drive at Weber Road, Rooms to Go plans to move across the highway and one exit over from a leased location to property it now owns. The new store will be a prototype, offering a complete line of its furniture on site, the first of its kind in Texas, according to a company spokesperson. It is expected to cost about $3.5 million and open sometime in 2021.
The new building will be 44,000 square feet. Demolition is expected to begin this month or early March. The location has been a bar for the last 42 years, operating under three different names.
The Corpus Christi bar also plans to move but has to find a new location first, owner Robert Garcia told reporters, adding that he plans to keep the bar on South Padre Island Drive.
